CANADIAN CARE AIDE
Length: Six (6) months
Certification: Joint Canadian and Jamaican Certificate
The profession of a Care Aide is refered to by many different names in Canada including:
PCA – Personal Care Attendant
CCA – Continuing Care Assistant
RCA – Resident Care Attendant
HCA – Health Care Aide
CSW – Community Support Worker
HSW – Home Support Worker
The choice of professional title assigned to Care Aides is provincially inspired; however, in most cases the resonsibilties are very similar. Any caring individual with a desire to help others can become a Care Aide. Care Aides represent a large and growing job group and the inclusion of a community training home support section in this program is valuable because this area of care has a high employment rate for graduates. With this program you can provide all aspects of personal care to patients in nursing homes, extended care facilities, rehabilitation centres, hospitals and community health agencies. As a worker in this field, you would require good physical health, stamina and a genuine desire to be a caregiver. Patience, understanding, emotional stability, dependability and team spirit are all traits that can help you excel as a Care Aide.
Brown’s Town Community College, St Ann; Pre-University School, Kingston; and Glo’s Nursing Education Centre, Kingston are three Jamaican institutions certified to conduct the training of Canadian Care Aides based on a Canadian Curriculum.

Note: CPR, First Aid, Food Safe and Basic Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS) are to be completed during the program. Each institution may have additional requirements and additional modules depending on the program being offered and the policy decisions by their respective administrations.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must:
1. Either possess at least one GCE O’level/CSEC subject (preferably English) OR applicants who are mature can sit a Canadian Adult Achievment Test (CAAT) to assess their competence in Science, Mathematics, English, and Critical Thinking.
2. Possess excellent communication skills.
3. Sign a criminal/medical waiver.
4. Obtain a satisfactory certificate of health from a physician.
5. Be subject to a criminal record check by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Jamaica and provide evidence of Immunization including TB testing prior to acceptance of registration.
