Moneague Community College
Moneague College, situated in the parish of St. Ann, Jamaica was established in 1956 as the Moneague Teachers’ College for the training and certification of mature teachers for the Primary system in Jamaica. Since then, the College has been engaged in a number of pre-service and in-service programmes which provide trained teachers for Basic, Primary, All Age and Secondary Schools. Since 1987, Moneague Teachers’ College (as it was known then) has been offering a one-year In-Service professional diploma course to those teachers who had previously been awarded a trained Teacher’s Certificate.
In 1993 the Ministry of Education, reacting to the Government’s policy on Education, recommended a change in the College’s direction, with the result of a multi-disciplinary institution emerging. The College now operates under the auspices of the Joint Board of Teacher Education (JBTE), the Council of Community Colleges of Jamaica (CCCJ) and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture.

Moneague will be delivering the Canadian Early Learning and Childcare (ELCC) Programme in 2011. This is an eighteen month (18) Diploma program where candidates will undergo training in Jamaica at Moneague Community College (MCC) based on the Canadian curriculum of the Bow Valley College, Alberta (AB), Canada. There is a significant need for Early Learning and Childcare Educators all across Canada especially in Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador, and Jamaica has a history of providing exceptional educators to North America.
Students will be registered as students of MCC, and graduates will be awarded a parchment signed by both MCC and Bow Valley College which allows the graduate to be recognised and employed in Jamaica and Canada.
Upon completion of the program students who had indicated an interest in Canadian employment will be interviewed in Jamaica by Canadian employers offering full-time permanent employment. Marmicmon IMC will only provide placement opportunities in Canada for graduates who, after consultation with MCC’s program coordinator, have demonstrated their maturity and ability to transport their skills to Canada.
The Provincial Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has offered a $5,000 Canadian grant for ELCC graduates to accept and remain employed in NL for a minimum of two years.
